The crisp autumn air ushers in the arrival of one of the most enchanting times of the year for fly fishing enthusiasts in Central Oregon. As the landscape transforms into a vivid canvas of gold and crimson, the temperatures cool and the river flows shift, along with the behavior of the area’s famed trout. The prime fishing conditions and a captivating blend of natural beauty are an angler’s dream, with the incredible conditions continuing through the winter.
“When winter comes, we just throw on another layer and go play,” says Russ Seaton, store manager and booking agent at The Hook Fly Shop, located in The Village at Sunriver. The Hook is home to Cascade Guides & Outfitters, Sunriver Resort’s top choice for private fly fishing excursions in the region.
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or you’ve never held a rod, Cascade Guides & Outfitters’ professional guides can plan incredible fishing excursions for all levels and abilities, ages 10 years and over. The waters around Sunriver Resort are as plentiful as the forested mountain views, with 100 lakes and 450 miles of diverse rivers and streams within an hour’s drive. So where to start? With the upper Deschutes River closed for the season, here’s what the experts say:
So where should you cast your line this season? With the upper Deschutes River closed, here are some top spots recommended by local experts:
The Fall River
Just 15 minutes from Sunriver, this spring-fed creek flows clear and cold for 10 miles before joining the Deschutes River. Open year-round, it offers both bankside and wading opportunities, though it demands precise presentation. Your best bet? Midges and small flies to entice the selective Rainbow Trout.
Crooked River
This year-round destination sits on a high desert plain, winding through a spectacular gorge. With eight miles of tailwater fishing, its bends feature a variety of water types - riffles, pocket water, runs and flats. Here, native Redside Rainbows provide non-stop action.
Crane Prairie Reservoir
Open through October's end, Crane Prairie is a world-renowned spot for "Cranebows" and a favorite of Cascade Guides & Outfitters. This incredibly productive lake, with a maximum depth of just 15 feet, is known for producing some of the largest Rainbows in the western United States. Its standing timber shoreline offers both challenges and rewards for anglers.
Remember, a day on the water isn't just about the catch (and release). Central Oregon's riverbanks offer spectacular mountain views and opportunities to spot local wildlife, including otters, mink, bald eagles and osprey.
